Corporation of Delta

The Corporation of Delta consists of three main communities - Ladner, Tsawwassen and North Delta. All three communities are located in the southwest of the Greater Vancouver Regional District. Tsawwassen is approx. 30 kms (about 40 minutes by car) from Vancouver, Ladner is approx 22 kms (about 30 mins by car)and North Delta is approx 16kms (about 25 mins by car).

North Delta has a population of 52,115 (2001 Census) making it the largest residential area, Ladner is an older small town with a population of 21,360 (2001 Census) and Tsawwassen has a population of 21,090 and attracts high income residents, the BC Ferries Terminal in Tsawwassen is a gateway to Vancouver Island.

Delta offers a wide variety of things to do; there are 1,350 acres of parkland and 32 kilometres of hiking, walking and biking trails. Burns Bog is 7,400 acres and home to many different species of birds, mammals and plants, it is the largest urban wilderness in North America.

The Deas Island Regional Park offers many activities from swimming and fishing to water-skiing. There is mountain biking, horseback riding as well as nature walks at the Watershed Park. There are many sandy beaches (including Centennial Beach) in Tsawwassen, which is part of the Boundary Bay Park offering many facilities including picnic areas, children's playground, a wildlife reserve and many more. The Parks located in the three communities have playgrounds, sports fields, water play parks, picnic shelters and skate parks. The Splashdown Water Park near Tsawwassen is open from May to September and has 13 waterslides, mini golf, hot tub, bungee jumping and picnic areas.

The Corporation of Delta has a number of Recreation Centres that have a wide variety of facilities. Delta has two seniors centres - Mckee House Seniors Centre and Kennedy House Seniors Centre - providing leisure services for people 55 years and older, there is a wide variety of drop-in programs available.

The North Delta and South Delta Recreation Centres both have ice arena's and curling rinks in addition to other facilities. The Ladner Leisure Centre has pools, an ice arena, a weight room, a sauna and a climbing wall. The Winskill Aquatic and Fitness centre is in South Delta and has a pool, weight room and fitness studio. The Sungod Recreation Centre which is located in North Delta has five pools, sauna, steam room, arena, weight room, aerobic studio, gymnasium, meeting rooms, and a physiotherapy clinic.

There are six golf courses located throughout the area which are sure to satisfy the demands of any golfer!

The area is served by the Corporation of Delta School District which administers 26 elementary schools, 2 junior high schools and 5 high schools.

There are a number of shopping malls offering many types of stores and services located through out the municipality. Depending on the season you can buy fresh fish at Ladner Harbour, the Punjabi Bazaar and market in North Delta is open daily and on alternate Sundays during the summer the outdoor Ladner's village market offers the opportunity to shop from over 100 vendors.

Health services in the Corporation are provided by Fraser Health and the Delta hospital located in Ladner has 24/7 emergency care.

Public transport is provided by Translink, there are frequent buses to and from Vancouver as well as connections to neighbouring cities. The nearest Skytrain station is in Surrey.

The three communities within the Corporation of Delta - each have a good mix of housing types from older houses to new condominiums in a variety of settings; North Delta is the most heavily populated residential area and has a number of sub divisions offering a mix of townhouses and detached housing.

Ladner retains its charm as a fishing village and whilst there are townhouses and apartments available it is predominantly detached family housing, there are also floating home developments. Tsawwassen is a prestigious area, with detached family houses being the most common, there are low rise townhouses and apartments. Waterfront homes tend to be more expensive and there are some houses that are worth over $1,000,000.
